We're looking for a new beginning out of West London- and have a big wish list... wondering if any of you live anywhere that you'd recommend?!

We're looking for a small town with -

  • 3/4 beds & garden for £400k max (2 must be doubles)
  • 30 mins from any mainline London stn (doesn't matter which one)
  • close to mainline train stn
  • decent schools
  • somewhere with a theatre, swimming pool, decent high street...

Am I dreaming??! Will we be in London forever not able to leave ... possibly because we don't know how lucky we are..?

hitchin!

drivingmissdaisy · 09/04/2010 10:33

North Essex - great schools, more house for your money and good train links to London.

drivingmissdaisy · 09/04/2010 10:35

Ps. Have you thought of Saffron Walden?

FakePlasticTrees · 09/04/2010 10:42

Sevenoaks! 25 mins to London Bridge, 3 beds for £400k and walking distance to station possible (currently one in our street!).

moocowme · 09/04/2010 20:44

must second Hitchin as its so nice. like a mini stalbans but without the hefty prices.

blinkinblimey · 09/04/2010 21:21

Ooh food for thought! Right, I have some research to do... Out of interest anywhere else in north Essex apart from saffron walden? Thanks

Chalfont St Giles? Reading (ish?)

blinkinblimey · 10/04/2010 17:26

Chalfont looks nice but maybe too much in the sticks. Anyone know what Amersham is like??

OP posts:
blinkinblimey · 10/04/2010 17:28

KSal I definitely like the look of Hitchin, but have heard it can get a bit rough of a Friday night...? Is that right? Or is that the same for everywhere these days?

Berkhamsted

there's very little on the market at the moment though

It's a lovely town.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/04/2010 17:42

Amersham is lovely

again very little on the market

humptyismarriedtoanumpty · 10/04/2010 17:47

chelmsford is nice, not sure if it's too far and no idea about house prices, but still is nice

BudaisintheZONE · 10/04/2010 17:54

Epsom/Ewell? 30 mins to Waterloo.

Not sure about house prices there at the moment though.

blinkinblimey · 10/04/2010 20:48

Brentwood & Chelmsford both nice and lots of good schools. Good transport links to London but nice countryside too!
