Can I whitewash a bare pine wardrobe with some white emulsion & water?

I walked round and round homebase and can't find 'whitewash' already done, so presume it's just paint + water, but will normal white emulsion paint do? I have some primer, and satinwood (for the skirting/doors) but wonder if it's too gluey to water down. I am not fussed about it being 'perfect' - though should I varnish ontop of a whitewash to seal? I would just paint the same as the doors but the bunks are already whitewashed... THanks

real whitewash is lime based isn't it? i'm sure it comes in powder form and you mix it up, you def wouldn't want to use that!

i have seen (on tv!) a white washed effect done on furniture using watered down emulsion paint - it would need to be on bare wood to allow it to soak into the grain though.

not sure about varnishing n top, i reckon if you used a water based matt varnish it would make it easier to clean and also protect the finish without losing the whitewashed effect.

maybe you coould do a test patch on the back of the wardrobe and see if it works and you like it?

You can mix white emulsion with matt varnish and get a bleachy limed effect.If you water down emulsion the bare wood will literally drink it initially so do one coat and let it dry thoroughly so that you can check its white enough.How do you want the finished article to look?

Erm... kinda like really thin white paint but still see the wood. Great tips, will whip something up tomorrow - thankyou
