I'm off to the Ideal Home Show tomorrow and these people are exhibiting there. I'm quite intrigued as we have a small house with not much scope to extend, but a large garden. What do you think of the idea?

Gosh, that's amazing. But totally impractical here (also London). We are too near the river. I think it would just fill up with water slowly.

Awesome. Want one. Need somewhere to house my mum and dad. Like hobbits.

cornsilk · 29/03/2010 11:26

I want one for the ds's! They'll be sound proof won't they?

Hi ladies. Hope you're all doing well this afternoon.

If anone has any questions about the Base Rooms, please feel free to message me as I work for this company!!

If you look at the website, the Base Room in the photos would cost you about £50k - £60k.
It's a separate structure to your house and you get to it by crossing your garden. Theres no underground access. The good thing about it is that in most cases there's no planning permisson required.

Its a great place to get your husband and his hobbies out the house!!

ILoveGregoryHouse · 29/03/2010 16:01

Fifi, could you, for example, add a conservatory on to a house and have access to the underground rooms from there? i.e. not excavating the foundations of the existing house. What about in areas of subsidence? Sorry, don't know how to CAT and this might count as advertising and we'll get into trouble. If it's awkward, I'll give you my e-mail address or maybe you could put a contact on your profile?

Hi Ilovegregoryhouse.

I have put my email address into my profile if you want to contact me there.

Thank you

Hi everyone, my husband came up with this idea and is busy talking his socks off at the Ideal Home Show. I was there yesturday (doing my bit) and taking a break from looking after our 4 children. We are quite overwhelmed by the response from the public especially since I mocked him and called it an air-raid shelter!! The Baseroom isn't attached to the house and it would need to be 3 metres away so as to not interfere with the foundations (otherwise underpinning could be needed, hence the hefty quotation). Anyway, if anyone needs any questions anwsered I will help if I can. But don't rule it out because you have a terraced house or you don't think your gardens big enough!

cornsilk · 30/03/2010 09:50

can you have a lawn on top of it?

toobizzylizzy · 30/03/2010 12:31

To Cornsilk
Yes, you can but it changes the structure of the roof so there would be extra cost involved. Astroturf would be a better and cheaper way of doing it, with very realistic one's available it would'nt look any different to the rest of your garden.

cornsilk · 30/03/2010 14:00

so could you then run about on the lawn?

toobizzylizzy · 30/03/2010 14:22

Yeah, you can put the bbq on it and your picnic table too!

cornsilk · 30/03/2010 14:38

ooooh!

fifihandbag · 14/04/2010 21:30

Just to let you know that if anyone is interested in Base Rooms you can see them at Grand Designs Live 1-9th May at Excel in London.

Just thought that might be useful for someone.
