took down the old wall units yesterday and the kitchen looks so much bigger.

We have a long thin L shaped kitchen that you walk through to get to the rest of the house. Originally it had dark oak wall and base units along which we removed. We didn't put the wall units back up as they obscured the light from the window at the end, and have only base units at full depth on one side, and half depth on the other. The base units take all our crockery, cutlery, pans and cooking kit.

Storage problems were solved by having the downstairs loo which was situated at the "entrance" to the kitchen (nice....) turned into a larder/general dumping ground.

Given the choice I'm not sure I'd have wall units in a kitchen again - it's so much easier having everything in one place.
