we live up north so summer may not actually ever be a problem - but south facing so gets hot even in the winter on a sunny day - but our windows are old.

mj - thanks, we're just pondering what to do after our planning permission for a loft conversion was refused, conservatory would be a good solution.

It makes a significant difference...it's called Solar Controlled glass - lots of people do it; Reflex / Pikington / Saint Gobain to name a few.
