Harrogate is fab!! Train not so great though direct trains to London due but not sure when.

Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe both nice with a villagey sort of feel. Bish especially, cycle path to town, lots of facilities in village (library, school, shops and 5 mins drive from huge tesco, very close to A64 which goes to Leeds

York is too far away. The commute will get you down. If DH needs to get to London I suggest you look at Leeds itself so DH can get the train to London easily.

Roundhay area is good. At a push you could live between Harrogate and Leeds but that area is incredibly expensive.

What would you plan to do about schools if you have DCs?

all good thoughts, thanks...

no kids at the moment but want them - so need to make sure we move to somewhere with decent schools if we need them in the future!

i like not having to drive for miles if we want to go out for dinner/go to the pub/nip to the shops...

dh likes trees, fields and the outdoors...

trying to find somewhere that ticks all the different boxes.

drove thru roundhay but full of bentleys which kind of put us off a bit.

i read somewhere that yorkshire covered thalf the area of belgium so trying to narrow it down a bit!

Had to at 'roundhay but full of bentleys'. More or less true.

You have to remember though that the area you are talking about is called 'the Golden Triangle'. The wealth there is similar per head as the South East and it is because people like you get good jobs there and want to live there. That is a good thing but it means houses are expensive and good schools are hard to get into.

It is worth thinking hard about whether you will actually be better off moving there though. That part of the North is far form cheap. A lot of South East retirees move there and brng their South East earned wealth with them. People who made a lot of money founding business or inherited them live there too.

I grew up there and know a lot of Northerners who live in the South East now who would love to move back but cannot afford to. If you can afford to move there though you will not regret giving it a try.

I think if you want to accomodate DHs wish for trees and fields you need to look at villages between Leeds and Harrogate. Nice pubs and supermarket deliveries do still happen even in the villages. Kind of best of both worlds but could still drag a bit if driving into Leeds for the train to London.
