Cost of rewiring house

Does anyone have any idea of how much it might cost to rewire a house? The house in question is 4 bedrooms, almost 50 years old and I suspect the wiring hasn't been touched since the mid-1970's.

We have a 3 bedroom, 2 reception room terrace and our electrician took 2/3 weeks to rewire the whole house on his own. I think we paid about £2500 which I think is on the high side but I trust him and was happy to pay for a good job.

We have a 2 1/2 bedder which was rewired 2 years ago. Cost £5000 (in Surrey). Lots of sockets put in everywhere and a lot of the (strange) lighting revisited. Had the old radial wiring and been added to and added to and all sorts of stuff - including wiring in of "new" (to previous owner) boiler - had been bodged and needed sorting out. Took 3 weeks to do. Will be much more careful about the next house we buy.

Ouch yomellamoHelly . I guess that's the Surrey premium - or at least I hope so.
