Has anyone ever dug out a basement to make another room?

Was it expensive and terribly disruptive?

I am seeing a house on Saturday which is really too small but as it has had its loft turned into a room already the only way is down! Terrace so can't go sideways and the garden is 30 feet long ie small enough already.

The house has 3 bedrooms. I will need 3 bedrooms plus a study when the DSs are old enough to need their own rooms, so that I can work from home sometimes. And looking at the floorplans, I might need some storage space too, for suitcase and things that aren't used very often. So we could move in right now, but it won't last for long unless I make it bigger. I wondered about the basement....

It would be expensive and messy - you would probably need to move out while it was being done. As it is a terrace you would need to negotiate with your neighbours for a party wall agreement and they might not be keen (I wouldn't!) Price wise you are probably looking at 30-40k at least.

Tbh it sounds like this is not the right house for you in terms of size. Unless you are prepared to move again in a few years....

Very expensive, risky if not done absolutely right, so I really wouldn't
