Moving in a few weeks time (with a full packing service) and would appreciate your thoughts on what to put in the essentials box - and what not to put in. My list so far:

Tea/Coffee/Sugar/Biscuits
Kettle
Mugs
Set of plates/cutlery (Or better to use plastic/picnic stuff??)
Loo roll
Post-it notes/pens/sellotape/scissors
Set of bedding
Mobile phone

Plus???

basic toolbox
lightbulbs
fuses
cleaning essentials and lots of kitchen roll
notebook for taking down meter readings etc
torch with spare batteries
teatowels
binbags
your essential toiletries
soap
disposable cutlery/plates etc are great and buy in lots of those thick polysterene cups as removal men drink gallons of tea!!
best of luck

Remember moving house is hard on the body- pain relief, plasters and ralgex are always good! Good luck!

Have just moved recently and the best thing I did was arrange an Ocado delivery on the day (once I knew the removal men would be gone). Especially useful if you include bung in the oven type foods pizza etc or cold picnic bits and of course wine.

Corkscrew/bottle openers.
Clothes for everyone for a couple of days (inc shoes)
List of utility suppliers and their phone numbers so that you can call them with meter readings.
Look for curry/pizza delivery services in the new area online and write their number down/print a menu from their website if they have one

Put all these things in a car - else they will pack them by accident. SiL couldn't find the kids school stuff for a week when they were packed, so school or work essentials in the car is a v good idea

Kettle/tea etc plus mugs. Scissors, cleaning stuff and bin bags.

I thought it was the law that you have to have fish and chips from the chippy whilst surrounded by semi unpacked boxes when you move though rather than worrying about any kind of food prep??

Thanks everyone - any other suggestions out there?

I second what snotbaby said. Some very, very nice bubble bath and scented candles.

A bottle of fizz to celebrate.

Garden toys if weather OK to keep the DC busy outside.
