smoke alarms and my tenants

My flat is rented out to three sharers, they've been there for 3 years. I've just found out they don't have any smoke alarms up although I provided and installed them when they moved in. Apparently they kept going off when they were cooking. Of course I understand this (I'm a haphazard chef myself) but surely I would be liable if god forbid there was a fire?

yes, you would be. I would write them a letter requesting/demanding they be reinstalled immediately.your contract may/could also term this as damage or whatever so you could cite this as a breach of their contract.

can you afford to get ones that are wired into the electics? im sure they can't be turned off.

hm, wired into the electrics? That sounds like a good idea, I'll check them out. I've got a handyman going round there next week who's going to check they're all up and working, so if it's basic wiring involved presumably he could do it.

I've written to them stating that the alarms must be in working order.
