How do I find a good builder for our house extension?

Do I just look up Yellow Pages? We have one company already in mind but want a few others to give us quotes to compare prices.

I am thinking of writing a letter to pop through the door of folk who have just had their house extended- is that mad?

How did you find yours?

We got ours through word of mouth but could scarcely be any further from you sorry.

Recommendation is absolutely key. Speak to other mums at school, neighbours or yes absolutely people who have just had work finished. Most people will gladly talk to you about their experience IME.

DH found ours on ratedpeople.com.

I've knocked on doors of people who've had work done. Good builders will also give you people to conatct to see for yourself.

Did you use an architect or building regs. consultant? If so I would ask either of them for personal recommendations of builders with whom they have worked on similar projects.

we asked our architect/ planman and then i asked for recommendations on our works electronic notice board - working for a large organisation i got plenty or responders and found our man.
