Advice about moving to Manchester / Lancashire

We're considering a move to Manchester from London. I'd be working near / at Salford Quays and we're wondering how much further our house budget would go. I'd want to be reasonably close geographically to my parents in Saddleworth, but we currently live in a fairly leafy, pretty bit of SW London, full of people our age with children, and we love it here.

Where could we live near Manchester for the same sort of experience? If we were moving to Newcastle, I'd be thinking of Jesmond or Gosforth, but I'm struggling to make the same associations for Manchester.

All advice and suggestions very welcome.

Have a look at this thread - it has been much angsted over elsewhere

Worsley. Edge of Salford, great access to Salford Quays on M60 ring road for access to Oldham, BIG houses (from pleasant Victorian and Edwardian semis, detached, to massive footballers' pads), decent schools, nice green spaces (canal walks etc)

If you want more of the 'urban village' experience, south Manchester/Cheshire is perhaps more your thing, but further away from where you want to be...

Come to sunny Chorley and buy my house :-) We used to commute to Salford Quays every day.

Didsbury for sure if you don't fancy Saddleworth.

Jennie - I only know Chorley as the home of Botany Bay! As the long-term plan would be for my parents to help with childcare, I think it might be a little bit too far out.

Fivecandles - how poncy is Didsbury? We're fortunate that where we are now has a sensible sort of high street but I've lived in towns where you have to travel to buy anything other than £25 scented candles and £30 babygrows.

My dp works at Salford Quays , is an hour commute from Rossendale , Lancs.
I love living here , great community feel.
Prob half hour to Saddleworth on a weekend , we drive back regularly to dp's family on a weekend!

Said - thank you - several recommendations for Prestwich on that thread which I will follow up.

I think there are sensible shops in Didsbury along with nice Delis, cheese shops, cafes etc but you're minutes away from Manchester city centre.

ZZMum · 28/02/2010 08:32

yes agree with Didsbury - I moved here from london and I love it .. lots of different types of shops from poncy to the bookies.. you need never leave - as I often prove!
