Is this the most ludicrous plumber's quote EVER?

Sorry, need to let off steam. We are doing up a house and it is taking ages and going way over budget. Ok, you say, tell me something new.

Well, we have had a job to get plumbers round at all, let alone send us quotes for the work. Finally one did. Roughly as follows:

Bathroom: fit two basins, bath and bidet.
Remove saniflo loo.
Route WC waste inot void under stairs, through 18" wall into ground floor shower room = £3650 inc VAT

Shower room: fit basin and loo
fit shower tray and sliding door enclosure and square up existing wall for shower tray - £2230

Kitchen: connect sink and taps and add isolating valves for washing machine and dishwasher - £485

This lot comes to close to £6.5k. We don't have it. I could weep.

I'm in Berkshire near a commuter town and in a so called 'posh' area. Going rate for plumbers here is £200 per day. The quote you had is one of those prize ones - if you gave him the work he would think his Christmas and birthday had arrived together and he would ditch other work to fit you in.

When I had major building work I had quotes ranging from £22,000 to nearly £100,000 all based on detailed architects drawings and spec.

Lady T. I don't know if this is too late to be of use to you but my DP spoke to someone he knows who works at a nationwide property management company and they recommend Taylor Services who are based in Wheatley. This is their website. If you do make contact with them then mention that they were recommended by Gem Estate Management.

Do it yourself.

Seriously.

I had NO plumbing experience , neither did dh but between us we plumbed in a bath, a loo, a washbasin,(all from bathstore) washing machine , dishwasher....

It was NOT difficult.
200 year old farmhouse.

Dh gave up on plumbing in the toilet pan so I did it on my own

I was going to ask if you were in West Oxfordshire. I live in a town here and have many friends who are having trouble sourching plunmbers. One ended up taking over 5 months to finish her bathroom as he kept disappearing
