removal companies: how much does a "national" move cost?

my dh has a job interview in Edinburgh next week and if he gets it we would be moving up from the Midlands. We just want to be clear in our heads about how much the move will cost us (although apparently there is a generous relocation allowance).
Does anyone have any idea how much this kind of move might cost? Have looked online but no company even wants to give a hint of potential cost without looking at how much stuff you have.
I love the idea of having the company pack everything for you but does this costa a ridiculous amount more?!
TIA

It is usually worked out on a "number of boxes" required basis. The distance will also be a factor as it will affect how many days you require the staff for. It will also depend whether you want them to pack for you or if you are going to pack yourself.

Best thing to do is to get a few companies to come round and quote for you to get a more accurate price for your home. They should be more than happy to do this - get a range from national companies to local companies. The advantage of a national company is that they can use local staff to load up and unload and you don't have to pay ffor a full crew to stay over - just the driver and mate.

We had a 4 bed home move - about 80 miles - and it cost about £1500 (incl VAT). But we had tonnes of boxes (was v quick and had no time to have a good clear out), a piano and they packed for us. We went over one truck so had to have 2. The move took 3 days - first day packing, second day finishing off packing and delivering beds to new home, 3 rd day delivering all the boxes. My advice is have a good clear out before you get them to come round and quote!

A full packing and removal service for that distance will be at least 5K for a firm like Pickfords.

We were moved 150 miles by Pickfords, and packed by them, and it cost 1500, two years ago. That was a two day process - packed the first day, then they drove to the new house and left the lorry overnight in their nearest depot (v important that they aren't just parking up anywhere with all your stuff), then rocked up at midday to move it all in once we had the keys.

The cost of them packing is not that much more than the straight removal when you have a move that will take more than one day ime - can't remember the marginal cost on that move, but the move before (250 miles) it was something like 10% of the removal cost.

And worth it's weight in gold - this time we had 10 days notice that we would actually be moving, and were literally still working the day we moved in our previous job sites

Am writing this as the lovely Pickfords men are packing my stuff into their van!

We did a relocation move 5 years ago, 100 miles, we paid £1400, one van, 3 men, one day from a 3 bed house. They charge for the mileage and we also stored our stuff at their depot overnight in the van and had it delivered the next day at 9am.

Our current sale is 2 day move, today is packing the van with as much stuff as they can, tomorrow (our completion day) they come back to take our beds etc.

We are storing our stuff as we can't match our completion date for purchasing the new house. Storage is £80 per week then £25 for fire insurance. This move is local but costing £1600.
