Two girls, how many bathrooms will we need?

I am becoming a regular in this topic! So we've got two little girls, planning to move to a house for good - well the next 20 years or so. How many showers and baths and mirrors will we need with two teenage girls in the house? Will one bathroom with bath and separate shower do, or should we plan on having an additional shower room built in?

We've just had a big refurb and the architect was keen for us to have a silly number of bathrooms. Pah - he doesn't have to clean them. We didn't listen to him.

We have kid's bathroom with bath, shower and loo in and our en suite which has a loo and big shower. Plus a downstairs loo. That's still too many loos to clean, IMO. But it works perfectly for us other than that.

What do people think of having a downstairs shower room? It would only be used when there's too much traffic in the one family bathroom that we'd have and by visitors. I think I'd rather have that than an upstairs en-suite?

Downstairs shower room is ok - we inherited one, but its not so relaxing to shower in it as am nearly always interrupted by DS1 or 2 and also you have to trudge through the house before and after.

I woudl prefer an upstairs shower room/loo (not ensuite) for me and DH and then a family bathroom.

Whose going to clean them? This is the key question.

If your girls are going to clean their own bathrooms, then have as many as you like.

If you are going to have to clean them, or you are going to have to tidy them and pay for them to be cleaned, then have as few as possible.

at 1 bathroom per person.

That would take up most of our house

I would say a second bathroom would be lovely in most houses but far from necessary.

I grew up in a family of 5 and only one bathroom, it was never a problem. We only have one bathroom now and no scope to extend upstairs so that's the way it will stay.

We do have a downstairs loo though which is great.

My ideal would be one bathroom for parents, one for kids to share, and one to keep nice for guests. And a downstairs loo.

[sigh]

There's 3 of us and we have 1st floor bathroom with loo sink and bath. In attic we've got a small bathroom with loo, sink and shower.

Even though my dd's only 7 it works really well in the morning - someone can shower while the rest of us can go in bathroom. WE decided not to put attic one en-suite as its useful to have sep loo without people going through bedroom and as my dd gets older she will want a shower.

best thing we ever did was to put in small bathroom.

one. one for the whole family. Isn't that kind of standard?
