Lampshade/light fitting for master bedroom?

Inspiration needed!

Has anyone seen anything unusual that would look good in a bedroom? Most of the things I see are more suited to living rooms.... And interiors magazines seem to rarely show the central light fitting in photos as they focus on the bed....

The colours in the room are creams & greys. Some dark wood furniture. There are period details, eg fireplace, panelled built-in cupboards, antique chest if drawers but the headboard & bedside tables are simpler/more modern in style.

A chandelier type fitting would fit in but dh would veto anything too girly! The ceilings are high so anything too small looks wrong.

Oh and budget is high-street rather than designer!

We abandoned our overhead bedroom light! We decided that good wall brackets either side of the bed that, crucially, can be switched on or off individually or together, gave plenty of light. And then I have an Artemide Tolomeo by my dressing table so that I can see well to get made up.

However, DD has this birdcage lamp as her overhead light and if she didn't have it I'd have in my room, like a shot. It's beautiful.

Bosoir, that is lovely and unusual. Sadly I can't see it getting past dh.... he is very anti-pattern or anything girly.

Are you looking for a light fitting involving an electrician or a shade?

Bonsoir · 14/02/2010 17:36

My DP looked at it in horror the first time I suggested it. But it really is very lovely and not too girly really - birds not flowers etc.

He loves it now! And it always gets very favourable comments from visitors.

Either really - obv one that doesn't need an electrician is handier but a friend's dh is an electrician so can fit if necessary.

Something like this probably would sneak under dh's radar

is this too 'girly'

The style is ok but looks like it is made with those capiz shells - which I am not keen on myself!

what about this? Our room sounds similar to yours - grey walls, period fireplace and some dark colours too, and eventually i found this (in the largest size, cos the room is big) and it looks great this

Thanks kitsmum - yes I have been considering a drum shade with a strong pattern too. And agree it needs to be large - I have one up temporarily until I find what I want and it us definitely too small
