Open fire??

Has anybody got experience of having an open fire in a shared house / tenement flat?

I really want our chimney swept for an open fire. Chimney is clearly open (have had hailstones down before ) but hasn't been used for a good few years...

We're in a smokeless fuel zone unfortunately and I know a burner/stove would be more efficient but dont' have money for that investment right now and probably dont' want to put that investment into this flat (too small for mobile children and we're ttc)

I am a complete open fire virgin (though very good at campfires ) any words of advice?

We're going to check out our access to the shared attic space tomorrow with plans to call the sweep on monday.

Thanks.

we have an open fire, behind a massive fireguard. if your chimney works, then there shouldn't be a problem. However, i wouldn't bother if you're goingto move...instalation & puchase of our teeny-weeny fireplace was £750
