DH may have to move job to Weston Supermare. What's it like? Where are nice places to live nearby. Need to live on good transpost route as haven't got a car.

Have DCs in primary school. Where are good schools. There seem to be alot of church schools but do you have to be churchy to go to them?

Re my earlier post Bridgewater/WSM. Yes Id class them as much the same in the town centres. The only reason I said at a push Bridgewater instead of WSM was because there are more villages in the area and they are cheaper and less urbanised than North Somerset villages near WSM. It wasnt a recommendation to live in or near either!

Ok many thanks for that

I'm sensing a very gradual change in Weston, emphasis on the very gradual. Was reading a document when the council have laid out plans for the future and they have been looking at other places to come up with a strategy and it seems there is more focus on Weston as a place to live rather than a tourist resort. That awful shopping centre has been bulldozed and Wayne Hemingway is something to do with plans for the Tropicana. The college is getting University status and one of the schools is actually finally getting more decent results.

Meanwhile the Bristol to London train line is becoming faster and predictions are that this will have an impact on surrounding areas such as Weston. Property prices are increasing. Friends of my Dad were buying in Weston as priced out of BS3 and were worried when the lady they were buying from died mid transaction that the Executors would increase price to reflect the rising house prices.

My prediction is that more people priced out of BS3 (who are the people who would have bought in BS6, BS8 and BS9 when I was a child) will look further out. Portishead and Clevedon have already gone up a lot in recent years so more are going to give Weston a go. They'll be younger couples with no children yet but in time will have families and have to deal with the school situation. Some will try for the Priory, Churchill and even KOW in Cheddar but won't get in and start using the local schools. I think in time it will become far more of an annexe for Bristol then it has been .

BrandNewAndImproved · 08/05/2016 09:39

Have a look at Portishead. It's more family then retirees and close to Weston-super-Mare.

I think everywhere has there upsides and down sides but Weston is quite shit compared to the beautiful places around it.

EmpressTomatoKetchup · 08/05/2016 09:58

Why BS3? sugarplumtree I live in Southville, have not heard WSM mentioned by anyone as a potential up and coming area by anyone.
Cleavdon, N. Somerset villages, Yatton, Nailsea, Backwell, Portishead yes.

SugarPlumTree · 08/05/2016 10:13

I'm probably wrong Empress , it's just based on observations over time having grown up in Bristol and my family having lived in Bedminster since the year dot.

If my Dad is to be believed, BS3 has changed in character beyond all recognition in recent times. 2 of his neighbour's family members have bought in Weston in the past year. Neither of them have families so schools not an issue for them. Before they would have looked at the places you mention, my cousin moved out to one of them as a gradual ripple effect from Bristol started years ago, but I'm sending a gradual and very subtle shift with younger couples now being prepared to look at Weston whereas in previous years they wouldn't .

I'm probably completely wrong and for the record I hate Weston and am on here back up the thread not being very positive about it 6 years ago. My Dad knows how much I hate Weston but has a soft spot for it as had holidays there when he was a child. He likes to keep me informed and his moans about how BS3 has changed so much piqued my interest so I've been doing a bit of reading whilst doing my family tree. Currently I think Weston will change a bit over the next 10 years, time will tell and I'm probably very wrong.

EmpressTomatoKetchup · 08/05/2016 10:41

You dad is prob right. I've heard this a lot to but then I'm one of the incomers from London apparently responsible for all the change!
I completely understand why older families would sell up and move to Weston but people I've met looking to buy or are priced out of BS3 are looking in the immediate neighbouring areas not Weston.

SugarPlumTree · 08/05/2016 10:56

I think in Southville you're in a slightly different demographic. The change there started much earlier than say around North Street- one of my school friends bought there early 90's. It's only anecdotal and based on two people on Dad'ssmall section of road in the Chessels but whereas before people would be go to the other places you have mentioned, these two have now decided on Weston which is a new development. I let his moaning go in one ear and out the other. He lived in the Home Counties whilst working in London and close to the Downs for years so a certain irony. I think partly he's not moaning just commenting on times changing from the days of the Demon Barber of Bedminster

I'm one of those destroying the character of Dorset according to a FB post on my feed moaning about incomers. I've been doing a lot of reading recently on the history of Bedminster and surrounding area whilst doing my family tree. There used to be a lot of mining, to the extent some of our family moved over from South Wales to get work. And there were a lot of orchards I think I read too.

Simon1973 · 08/05/2016 11:50

Im pleased to see some more up to date posts on the areas, things are changing all the time, I was told recently lots of moneys been spent on weston.

Personally I have no interest on weston itself, but north worle seems very nice from what I've seen, visited last month and going again in six weeks fir another look around and turning off holiday eyes and putting living in eyes on.

Visited briggy and hated it, bristol seems pricey, lots of 1930 houses but need too much work, Worle seems to be i'm out price range hence why we are looking here.

The wife will be working in Nailsea, as for me im quitting work and will be looking a fresh.

In my mind, we would never really visit weston apart from perhaps a Sunday morning in a coffee shop, if they have one, we don't go clubbing or any of that stuff, we,are in our early forties and want a nice house with a garden and garage, I have a weekend car which has been scratched on many occasions here in Surrey\Croydon borders, skumbags with no respect all around and I'm sick of it, so looking for a different pace of life and somewhere to safely work on my car etc.

Misses just wants a nice kitchen and garden, something we also lack here.

We live in a,one bedroom flat in not a great area and the council want 200k for it, perhaps this, shows why we want out Smile

In our price range. *

Which neighborhoods in North Somerset are best places to live safe and family-friendly with young children?

wynkenblynkenandnod · 07/01/2024 07:13

Have a look at Portishead, Blackwell, Wrington, Langford and Congresbury. My cousin has just moved to Portishead to start a family.

wynkenblynkenandnod · 07/01/2024 07:28

I forgot Winscombe.

Rasimu1981 · 09/01/2024 20:24

Which neighborhoods in Taunton are best places to live safe and family-friendly with young children?

wynkenblynkenandnod · 09/01/2024 22:27

@Rasimu1981 you’d be better off starting your own thread in the property section then more people will see it and be able to answer.

I’m laughing reading this thread back as I am on here in 2 different names and I said I hated WSM further back on the thread. Times change, we now live in WSM along with lots of people from London, Bristol and Bath. What a difference 14 years makes.
