What would you do? Re Asbestos left by previous owner in garden.

Briefly - we've recently moved in to our new house - and have found that previous owner has left a load of asbestos rubble sacks at the bottom of the garden.

Been looking into cost of getting rid - and its alot. About £100+ if we take to rubbish dump in our own car (will not because some of sacks are split) or getting on for £300 if company comes to take it away.

The sacks were not where they are now when we looked around - we were not aware of any asbestos rubbish - and feel it is not our rubbish so we shouldn't bear this cost.

It is complicated by the fact that she has left the rubbish in a bit of the garden that technically isn't our garden - but is accessible by us and the children. So I guess her reply to us will be - it's not on your land so it's not your problem - get the farmer to sort it (whose land it is).

So how do you think we should tackle with previous owner? Get the farmer to sort it out with her? Or should we just put it down to experience and sort it ourselves? Or would the council / environmental health sort it?

Plus when we moved in we didn't part with the previous owner on the best of terms because of other issues...

Is really up to the farmer to pursue her, if it's on her land. I would approach the farmer, see what his reaction is. If the farmer won't remove the asbestos, and take it up with the previous owner for basically fly-tipping on his land, then I would contact the Council's environmental health department explaining the situation and seeking advice.
