Where to get fitted carpet from?

Can anyone recommend somewhere good to get new carpet?

It's for my flat which I'll be renting to tenants so I'm looking for cheap but decent / hardwearing rather than swish!

We're in London.

Did I mention cheap?

Any ideas gratefully received!

I was going to say John Lewis but might not fit into the cheap category.

Allied worked well for us. Cheap but hard wearing and they fitted it really well. We bartered on price though and they accepted. Everything was measured and fitted on time - very impressed.

Thanks luciemle I'll have a look.

Nice idea orienteerer, if only! Not quite in the cheap category though unfortunately!

We got the cheapest bland carpet from JL and it proved much more hardwearing than the room done by Allied. Also fitted better. It was in part though that Allied don't do a huge range of widths so had to have some patches for a victorian flat with alcoves and a bay window.

Did take them a while to fit it though as the junior fitter forgot to take his tape measure out from underneath it so all had to be redone.

Sorry, should add, we've let our flat out to students for the last 2 years and the JL stuff has scrubbed up very well. The Allied will need to be replaced before we relet/sell.

If you are near to Southall I know an excellent place.

My dad is a carpet fitter.

Skimp on carpet is Ok but get the best underlay you can afford.

A good fitter will make a cheap carpet look good and vice versa.

Some good food for though here, thanks

I should have said, one of the rooms is wider than the standard width carpet comes in (it's 16' x 14') so it would need to be somewhere that can do it.

The cheapo discount place down the road here doesn't unfortunately

We could get to Southall - we're not that near (Hackney), but we have a van we can use next week.

Well I can heartily recommend Carpet Town in Southall.

They have rolls of carpet in stock plus you can buy room size off cuts. I have bought several carpets from them. They can also fit if you would like too.

Don't go to Allied carpets.

I thought I was getting a good deal from them until I shopped around. try to find a local fitter. I would have paid through the teeth for fitting from Allied, and the carpet would have been crap too. With the local place I used, i got a mcuh better quality carpet because I was paying less for the fitting.

lowrib · 30/01/2010 14:32

Good advice NonVinaigretteRien thanks. Only the problem is the local places round here don't seem to do the wider carpets size. (Over 4m)

I guess I will have to cast my net further afield!

If you're in Hackney, have a wander up the Holloway Road and have a look at what is available, you could then compare with Allied/ JL etc

BrigitBigKnickers · 30/01/2010 16:49

Allied are awful. They charge you for delivery even if you use their carpet fitters and they are bringing it with them anyway!

Their products seem cheap but are not great quality and it's quite hit and miss with the fitting. We had one carpet that needed a join. They joined the carpet with the pile running the wrong way so it looked like a slightly different shade.

The next time we needed a carpet we found a local carpet fitter and he provided us with a better quality carpet and underlay for £30 less than Allied.

lowrib · 30/01/2010 19:22

Ah yes, Holloway Rd! We're going there anyway to look at cheapo bathroom sets anyway, I'll definitely have a look when we're there, cheers

Think I have been totally put of Allied now!
