How easy is it to replace tiles?

We are doing up our bathroom and we want to replace the tiles. How easy is it to take the tiles off the wall? We did think about painting the existing tiles but we've been told that it is rubbish.

We've replaced tiles twice. It does make a mess of the wall when you take the old ones off. DH had to replaster the wall both times. Putting new tiles on isn't hard I can manage that.

I wouldn't paint them personally. DSis did it just to spruce the bathroom up, but she ended up replacing the tiles in the end.

Can you tile over the existing tiles - that is really easy & works very well

I've heard the paint you can get to repaint tiles is a total nightmare - a colleague decided to do it and was utterly fed up in no time - said he basically had to do each one individually and sort out the runs in the paint before he could move on to the next!

Taking them off will gouge holes in your wall, which would then have to be replastered to be flat enough to retile.

Tiling over the top is probably best, as long as they're flat and undamaged.

I'm not sure about tiling over the top of the old ones as I don't want the tiles to stick out too far. I could buy some tiles and just see how far they stick out.

You can get nice edging bits which finish it off quite nicely

Personally, I would start from scratch. Take off the old ones. We have recently done our bathroom and the tiles came off quite easily. You get a better base for the new ones - believe me -- its what I do as a job.
