Have you got secondary glazing? What's it like?

Copied this from Chat, as realised that wasn't getting responses! Anyway....

Have just moved into a nice old house with single-glazed sashes, Victorian era. It's freezing and really noisy (but looks very lovely ). Is secondary glazing good at cutting out noise? We're straight on the South Circular. Any companies to recommend/shun?

Thanks in advance...

We have it in some of bedrooms, was here when we moved in and am glad as the windows are huge and make the rooms feel very cold.
But it is a bit ugly so am planning to update it and get some made by this place, as it looks much less obvious, at least I hope it will, am going to trial it in the small upstairs loo in case I dont like it!

Shutters?

Thanks! Will ask them for a quote.

But shutters would also block out light, wouldn't they?
