So it looks like DH is going to accept a new job in Swindon and we will need to relocate. From uni days I remember Swindon not being that great but that there are some lovely villages around there. I would prefer to be to the South or East of Swindon rather than the west to be nearer family. Is Lambourn nice ( did a search on here and someone said it was awful), what about Marlborough or Pewsey ? I'd like to be in a village preferably but access to a largish town with supermarkets and restaurants. I'd love to hear all your words of wisdom. I told a friend we would be relocating down there ( who lives in Bath) and she said to be aware of some very parochial villages with drug problems ??!!

I lived in Lambourn -right in the middle of it - for a year. Drunken people staggering about, the whole place went mad on inportant race days and it was a very VERY cliquey place. Schools not great but I loved the 300 year old house we lived in and the racehorses passing us twice a day. We moved to Hungerford which was much better especially with children. Lambourn has nothing to walk too, nothing to do there and it can be quite a lonely place.

Around swindon I would look at Highworth, faringdon (and surrounding villages) oxford, Hungerford, albourne + surrounding villages.

we did live right next a pub so that may accoubnt for the staggering people! The conversations dh and I overheard were fantastic too whilst they stood outside.

Glad it's been of use - it's so true about getting info on MN that you would never get by searching otherwise
I moved from C London to a small village and twas a thread on MN that clinched it for me.

Best of luck with it and indeed the impending arrival.

Have you looked at the Collingbourne's, south of Marlborough. On the road, but go back a bit and they're very pretty.
