Ice Dams

My gutters are full of ice and my down spout pipes are frozen solid. As a result as its defrosting the water is running into the house above the window. have managed to get rid of the ice IN the gutter but ice is all round the house. Has anyone had this and how did you stop it? Can't really afford to get a builder to fix it and I know its very unlikely to happen again, its all because of this horrible horrible freak weather we are having!

thanks for any help

It is rather worrying that water is "running into the house above the window". How is it getting in - do you have a gap there?
Another worry is frozen downpipes. Gutters with a bit of frozen water in is reasonable, but downpipes just take water away from the gutters and into the drains. If you really have downpipes full of frozen water, then you have a big problem.
Can you elaborate?

Having the same problem here water is finding its way through our bathroom ceiling which is them plastic panels with downlighters. It started near the window but is also in the middle of the ceiling now. Just got buckets and towels dotted about catching the water. Not switching the lights on of course. The gutters are so overloaded with snow and huge icicles hanging. Have checked inside the loft and no problem there so it must be getting through the brickwork near the guttering. We will have to get a builder to check things over and probably an electrician aswell. Sorry not helpful but we're in the same boat.
