Crumbly walls

My house is about 100 years old and the brickwork inside just crumbles when I try to drill it. I want to put up some shelves in my hall, but cannot make a decent hole{sad}

Does anyone have a solution?

Our house is 100 years old (in fact it's 100th bd is 20th June this year!)

The thing is that if your walls are that crumbly you could bash a big hole and fill it with a firmer substrate to take the screws. But the shelf won't be capable of taking weight. Your only realistic solution is to buy free-standing shelves.
