Need to paint picture rail/skirting. Do I go for gloss or something else (it'll be white)

Gloss is the cheapest most hardwearing paint, emulsion will chip easily and getting other types of paint is likely to cost more. Gloss comes in all sorts tho, oil based vs water based, matt, satin etc. Depends on your needs as to which you use.

We tend to used eggshell, much easier to apply and patch up when damaged than gloss but not as hard wearing.

We tend to use eggshell or satinwood. It has a more matt appearance than gloss, so doesn't shop up every lump and bump on our dodgy woodwork.

Another vote for eggshell.

we use satinwood. an amazing discovery as gloss is so hard to get to look good when you are just learning how to apply paint !

satinwood. gloss always drips
