Screwing into a brick wall- into brick or mortar?

Which should I drill into? To hang a shelf or picture for instance, with a rawl plug.

I would drill into the brick.

DH always does this kind of thing rather than let me near his power tools but he definitely measures up first to make sure he's drilling into brick, not mortar, and he does use rawl plugs.

Defo brick, or it'll just fall out again...and use a masonry bit, and the hammer drill function if your drill has one.....and be prepared to grit your teeth for hideous noise and vibration; I hate drilling into masonry!
