plumbing of dishwasher and washing machine

can someone please tell me why both dishwasher and washing machine are fed into to the outlet pipe, above the u bend. Why cant they be fed in below?
The reason that i am asking is, that every house that i have been inot is the same and this is from professional fitters.
I think it is ridiculous because all the stale smells from the dishwaher water that reamins in the pipe come up through the plug hole when the dishwaher is first turned on, and it smells like decaying bodies. Same with the washing machine ,with the residual water in that pipe too.

Surely its common sense to connect below u bend

Any professional plumbers on here

Both mine feed in this way, dishwasher under the sink and washing machine in the utility and neither of mine smell.

But my sink was new with new fittings about 3 years ago so the u-bend is relatively new and I do bleach the plug hole about once a week. Don't know if this makes any difference.

The U-bend carries the drain, surely?

do you happen to know if yours have a back flow valve fitted in inflow pipe on the cold water fill...I have a few friends who have the same problem. Some of the yukky water from the final rinse that is in the pipe coming from both the dishwasher and the washer sits there until the next wash and it just smells as it enters the pipework under the sink ,above the u bend. The u bend is there to stop the smells from the drain, but what stops smells from the foody stuff in the dishwasher?

Yes mine does have some box like thing (it's a bosch) on the cold fill pipe.

Also you need to clean the filter in the dishwasher, it is a food trap that captures all the bits of food so that may help.

I also use that Finish dishwasher cleaner stuff every few months (I live in a hard water area)

fizzy i ahev tried claning and beaching everything and i am meticulous,i have had the u bend off to clean that,it just smells horrible. Once the machines are going the smells disappear but it just pumps out this dreadful dead body smell to start off with and if someone walks in the kitchen it smells as if i have suffered from bad wind

sorry about the typos. Mine has a frey bos attached to the cold fill....desperate as my kitchen is new and it just seems to be the exit pipes. The pipes do seem quite long under the cupboards. I am wondering if they are storing the mucky water from the last wash.
