Do I need an architect to design my house extension when it's a pretty straighforward one?

We are going to do a 2 storey side extension and have planning permission already that came with the house (although I want to tweak these a bit). I am getting 2 architects out to discuss internal changes to these plans but I'm wondering what they do eaxctly? If I know how I want the rooms to be do I really need an architect (and their crazy fees)? Or will I need them to redo the plans to resubmit to planning?

Help- I'm a novice here!

Hi I am no expert either - we did not have an architect for uor single storey extension, but we did have someone technical to draw up a design so we could get it costed.

Try asking your local authority buildings inspectors to recommend someone to you.
