Loft conversion companies

Hi Can anyone recommend a good specialist loft conversion company? We are in Cambridge but there don't seem to be any specialists here. Have had builders round but these have been somewhat vague about size of room etc. When we had our loft converted in our old house we had a specialist company who came and gave us a price and rough drawings with sizes before we committed - would like similar kind of thing. Don't want to have to pay out in advance for archictect drawings...

Can recommend a builder in N Herts who specialises in loft conversions. Don't know if he'd come up to cambridge or not. Company is Ashworth Design and Build, and our contact is Ken Cooper. If you get in touch then tell him that the family who had the shed fire recommended him. Will dig out his number later for you.

Hi Mins

If you haven't already, it might be worth having a chat to TJD Builders - they aren't loft specialists, but they are very competent and very local, and may well turn out to have done a loft conversion in an identical house in the village in the past.

Lurking and wondering if anyone knows a similar company for south Wales/Gloucestershire ....

I keep hearing adverts for Saxon John Brown (I think) on local radio in Cambridge.

DaisymooSteiner · 29/09/2009 16:42

Here's their website

Thanks for all messages - will try some of these although I have heard 2 bad reports about Saxon John Brown although their website is very impressive.

That's interesting. I shall stop humming their jingle then!

We're having major building work done at the moment (nearly finished, yay!) and I would thoroughly recommend our builder. Although he's not a specialist, I know he has done loft conversions for other people. His name is Richard Peters on 07719731414 (he has got a landline, I just can't remember it offhand)

Thanks for that daisymoo - where are you based?

I'm in one of the villages around Cambridge, but I know Richard works all around the area. I've also been speaking to our chippy today and it turns out he used to be a builder and do loft conversions and would be happy to come round and have a chat with you. Obv I don't know what he's like as a builder but he's done a very good job on our carpentry work. Will post his number later.

We had Saxon John Brown quote for us a couple of weeks ago. Their quote was the most expensive and we found the company really frustrating to deal with - poor communication, plans getting 'lost', took ages to produce the quote. Having said that they were recommended by a parent at DS's nursery and the work they had had done by Saxons was stunning.

Thanks for comments. Cakeforbrains do you mind saying who else you have had quotes from? We have had them from Apex Lofts, City Lofts and G&M.

Daisymoo thanks for speaking to your guys - do post their number when you get a chance.

Hi Mins, our project is a two storey extension rather than a loft conversion, and we had three independent builders from the east herts area quote for us. I'm not sure if any of them specialise in loft conversions. Our build starts in a couple of weeks so I can't comment on whether we've chosen the right builder until he gets started!

DaisymooSteiner · 02/10/2009 11:42

Hi the landline number for our builder is 01954212016. The chippy forgot to give me his number when he left and I know he's going on holiday next week, so not sure when I'll see him again.

So far, barring any last minute disasters, we've been extremely happy with Richard. His was the cheapest quote by a long way and I was very suspicious, but he came with stunning references (the people we spoke to raved about him) and he's done a very good job, been very flexible and great to deal with. If you do give him a ring, say that the lady with the cockerel called Neil recommended him!
