Yeovil and surounding area

DP may be offered a job in the area which would mean relocating. We have been looking around Dorset previously (idly considering relocating for a few years!) but don't think we could afford some of the prices there!
Just looking for some inside information really. What the area's like, both Yeovil itself and surrounding villages. Thanks!

Yeovil itself is pretty much a pit, chavvy people and horrible concrete town centre. Lots of drunken violence and football yobbishness. Schools not great. My parents live there and I'm not a fan!

The surrounding villages are lovely though and there's generally good access onto the A303. Street with a lovely shopping outlet village is also a nearby bonus.

mil lives in yeovil. dont live there unless you have to.

street is a sh*thole, there are nice villages around and about but its not the most inspiring part of the world to be very honest.

have you looked over the border in sherborne?

redclover79 · 24/09/2009 00:07

thanks for the responses, had been wondering why the houseprices were so cheap! HerHonesty- we've had a look at Sherborne, South Petherton and Stoke-sub-Hamden and Templecombe, at the moment generally looking within a 10 mile radius. We'd prefer a village definitely!

Yeovil is vile. We avoid it as much as possible.

What are you looking for in a village? Tiny with no facilities, or bigger? Or small town eg Wincanton, Sherborne?

Most places (apart from Yeovil) are really lovely. We're about 15 miles from Yeovil on the Dorset/Somerset border.

If you have questions - feel free to ask!

Again - avoid Yeovil - it's not called Yeo-vile for nothing!!

My parents live in a tiny hamlet outside South Petherton, and it's lovely there. SP itself is a great village with a butcher, deli, good greengrocer etc - no idea what the (state) schools are like though.

Sherborne is lovely - but house prices will reflect that - villages around Sherborne may be worth looking at - Charlton Horethorne (used to live there!), Nether Compton etc.

East Coker is a fantastic village with a fantastic school, just outside Yeo-vile but it IS expensive because of that.

Castle Cary is nice too. Bit further than you want though.
Agree Yeovil is awful.

HerHonesty · 24/09/2009 19:01

MIL wants to move to norton sub hamdon. DONT move there. you have been warned.

redclover79 · 26/09/2009 23:11

thanks for all your responses! So, Yeovil's not great then?! What's the schooling system like there? We have lower, middle and upper here but I don't think anywhere else has it in the country. Have been looking at all your suggestions when I've had chance, we would definitely prefer a village!

I agree that yeovil itself is not a great place to live but the surrounding villages I think are lovely, sherborne, milbourne port, nether comptom etc... I would love to live there in the future we are planning to move to the somerset/dorset area DP is from there oringinally and we love it.
