DH has a job interview in Bournemouth coming up and we are looking at the area to relocate to, but are really struggling with the price of houses in the area (both to rent and buy)

We own a house in Bristol that is renting out - so would be looking at continuing to do that until the market settles, but is there anywhere that you can buy a house for less than 200k or rent for less than £800pcm? My ds will be going to school there ans it seems regardless of where I look the only affordable housing in the area is Portland or a mobile home

Any hidden gems I should look at?

nearer towards southampton?

Surfermum · 22/09/2009 21:43

Have you looked at Ferndown or Wimborne? I think they may be a bit cheaper. Ferndown would be ok for travelling into Bournemouth - it's a bit of a trek from Wimborne.

Try Canford Heath, Throop, Northbourne or Westbourne.

latestincarnation · 23/09/2009 08:53

We've briefly looked at Southampton - whats it like to live in though?

Is Ferndown noisy with the airport there?

I searched on here and there seem to be good things about Broadstone/corfemullen/wimbourne way. Does anyone know what the schools are like - w are a few years away from school age but hopefully this will be the "big move" after a fairly nomadic existence

I need to start playing the lottery

Where should I avoid?!

OP posts:
Surfermum · 23/09/2009 09:02

I don't think Ferndown is noisy. The airport isn't that busy, it's only a small one. But I grew up on the doorstep of Heathrow so am possibly not the best person to comment .

I'm in Broadstone and can highly recommend it. The schools are excellent, the best in Poole and people move to be in catchment for them as they are always oversubscribed - and the house prices obviously reflect that.

There's a real villagey feel to it. We have pubs, restaurants, all the shops you might need for day to day things and a sport centre.

latestincarnation · 23/09/2009 10:20

surfermum Broadstone did sound lovely - I'm hoping we can afford to rent there until I'm back to work and we can look to buying eventually. I also grew up under Heathrow's flight path - used to entertain ourselves by counting the number of planes stacking up over our heads, but after living in a really quiet place in the NE I was hoping to avoid it!

Are you truely a surfer mum?! Has Boscombe got its reef yet? Is that why its so expensive now? (used to be a bit rough but nice when I was visiting friends years ago)

OP posts:
Surfermum · 23/09/2009 20:39

The reef is nearly finished. Yes, I do surf, but not much since having dd, mostly when we go on holiday to Cornwall. Boscombe is definitely improving, the area down by the pier has been redeveloped and there are loads of new flats. But it still has its grotty areas and red light area and its reputation.

We must come from the same area near Heathrow, the teachers used to have to stop talking at school while planes went over if they were on a certain flight path. Ferndown, or anywhere round here really, is nothing like being near Heathrow. You get the morning Ryanair flight to Dublin and the afternoon one back sort of thing. Well, actually there are more flights than that, but YSWIM.

How many bedrooms do you need. I can always keep my ears open in case I hear of anywhere. Have you looked on Rightmove?

latestincarnation · 23/09/2009 21:52

Either 2 big bedrooms or would prefer 3-4. Rightmove have some nice ones - I would have to stretch my budget! Being off work with ds is wonderful but also £ limiting!

Wasn't Concorde fun?! It was bad enough and we were west of Windsor - poor Queenie must have needed ear plugs!

I'm more of a holiday boogie boarder and use to sail a lot (NOT yachting rah ) - looking forward to being by the sea (IF he gets the job that is)

Okey dokey I will keep an ear out.

I loved Concorde, I never tired of watching it go over. Did you used to sail at the reservoirs? I used to lifeguard up there at one point and on the river at Laleham, Chertsey and Runnymede. Oh and Windsor too sometimes.

It is a lovely place to live down here. Lots of watersports and sailing clubs. My sister has a yacht (rah ) and they're out on it most weekends. We have a campervan so we tend to be landlubbers, but jump at the chance to spend the weekend afloat with them when they invite us.

Surfermum · 24/09/2009 21:50

By the way if you're "latest incarnation" who were you before?

latestincarnation · 25/09/2009 18:02

I did a course once on the Queen Elizabeth reservoir, but mainly out near Reading on the gravel pits, and down in cornwall on holidays - not done for years though as life took over! If I got in a Laser now I'd be scared shitless, but that was always half the fun

Funny world, I trained as a lifeguard, but never worked (again, it was more for the sailing) but I first was shown Bournemouth by a gang of very lovely Boscombe lifeguards years ago - I was the envy of all the girls in the club those nights!! yum yum six packs

I don't post that often (scared of the vipers ) but have been Mistress seuss/belle seuss etc - ever since my pregnancy last year!
