Does anyone have a gas hob connected to an LPG supply?

Had been planning to get an electric hob, but our plumber's trying to convince me to get a gas one and connect it to an LPG cannister.

We've had electric hobs for years, so not really used to gas, but I know lots of people prefer it. Is LPG cheaper than electricity or more expensive? Does it work as well as 'normal' gas? Any other comments?

Definitely recommend it. We have LPG bottled gas and it's soo much better than electric. We had our electric hob ripped out as it was bugging me so much.

It's unbelievably cheap, we've got through 3 tall bottles in 5 years. Each bottle costs about £30, so works out at about £18 per annum!

Wow! That's amazing! Plus gas hobs are cheaper to buy.

I have had in the past (have mains gas ATM) and it's fab. It's cheaper and better IMHO. I'd never go for electric over gas given the choice.

There are cookers with a gas hob and an electric oven if you're not keen on having to change oven temperature measurements.

Another fan of gas for hob here. We had big LPG tank as boiler was gas too, we found LPG pricey but the hob alone wouldn't use much. Do make sure you get a hob suitable for LPG - ours had different regulator thingys to fit for mains gas or LPG. Whilst most hobs we looked at were fine for either the odd one is for mains gas only.

I have a gas hob connected to a propane cylinder and love it - would hate an electric one now. Have had it for over a year and am nowhere near using up my bottle. Only thing to bear in mind is to have your gas hob adjusted properly as bottled gas is a lower pressure than mains. Had a near disaster with mine as the light went out if you turned the ring right down and I ended up nearly blowing up our house (ok, slight exaggeration, but it shook me up!!) Saying that it cost me £50 to get someone out to fix it and it's been perfect since!

prefer the (LPG) gas hob to electric. Not sure how the prices compare.

We use LPG. The prices have really rocketted over recent years. We get through about 3 bottles a year (the 13kg ones, £24ish), for the cooker. You'd use much less if you're only using it for the hob. It may still be cheaper than electric for the oven, I don't know. But I still wouldn't swap to an electric oven/hob anyway. I guess it's what you're used to, but I don't like cooking with electric.

Thanks all. We're definitely going to have an electric oven as it's what I'm used to and would never know what to cook thing at, lol. Good point about the hob being compatible with LPG - was going to be an Ikea one, so will check before we buy.
