We badly need new windows but have no idea of the cost

How will I be able to find out without getting loads of firms round.

I quick guess and we have 13 window frames with more than one window in each frame.

UPVC or wood?

It varies from about £150-£600 per window (really wild ball park)

(that's upvc - wood has no upper limit )

Do you also need the doors done, ie front door, back door, patio/french door?
When we had our house done recently these were the expensive items.

I've just paid slightly over £3000 for 6 windows, upvc. We got a few firms out to give quotes and that one was the cheapest!

Hubby thinks it will be about £8000.

My builders told us it was about 200 pounds for a standard window and about 500 for a door. Sympathies as we need ours doing badly and will have to find 3k

Our most expensive quote was £4500. I think we could have got ours slightly cheaper if we had chosen tilt and turn windows, but we chose reversible, which were slightly more expensive but were what we wanted.

We also live in an older property and the windows are bigger than in newer properties so that may have had something to do with it.

We've only had them a fortnight and I love them it was money well spent and I'm so looking forward to a warm winter this year.

Ours were £7k 3 years ago, for 6 windows (all with 2 openers); french doors and a front door. Ours are brown on the outside and white on the inside, which puts the price up, plus the doors and 2 of the windows are pillarless.

I think prices vary greatly from company to company. What I will say that the bigger, corporate company's will give you a wildly expense quote to start with and then give you various discounts so it's a more 'reasonable' price. This price will still be a fair bit higher than most other company's, if you would rather go with one of the bigger firms, you could try getting quotes from smaller firms first and then try and get larger firm to match the price. It worked for us but you have to brazen it out, they will give you some spiel about having to sign on the day or else the discounts wont apply. It's a load of tosh, just stick to your guns and tell them you would love to go with them but you just can't afford their prices so your going with the other quote. Hth.

my friend got the whole house done, in south devon area for 10k.

She had large bay front room with 4 sections, 2 windows in kitchen and dining room, 4 windows upstairs including bathroom and back door. I think they took the bay as 4 windows. So that was 10 windows plus back door.

Our highest quote for 14 wood framed windows was 36K

We eventually paid 13K for hardwood frames, from a local firm.

We had a chap from Staybrite in our house for about 4 hours, despite wanting wooden frame sash windows, which they do not sell. They told us they sold them in order to get in the house and to talk our ears off, but they didn't. We were quoted £6000 for UPVC ones, but didn't go for it as it wasn't what we had in mind in the slightest.

Oh and he had loud, clearly fake conversations with a colleague on his mobile: 'Really Mr Smith? You're telling me I can can offer them as low as £6000? Are you sure? Okay, I'll tell them'. Big pile of crap.

It is such a lot of money - which we don't have - and I don't even like living here.

We need a new window for the utility room. DH opened it last week to get ready to paint it (wooden) and the whole bottom of the frame fell off!
It had really bad damp rot. He wants to do it cheaply and get a window unit from Wickes and pay someone to put it in as it can be quite fiddly.
