How much would you expect to pay for having the exterior of house painted?

Can anyone shed light on this for me?

We need to gather quotes for the exterior painting of a large farmhouse.

Its split into two so we need to know what we are doing as we are splitting the cost with our neighbours and don't want any avenue for upset!!

Problem is that our neighbour has been here for a long time and is reccomending a "mate" to do it and saying he will do a good price (?) - we don't know what a "good price" would be...

So any ideas - I guess by the square metre or by the day?

I think the easiest thing to do would be to be honest with the neighbour and say that you'd like to get two other quotes as well as his mate's.

I'd perhaps phrase it that you know from experience that getting mates to do work for you can lead to upset and broken friendships if you don't go about it in a standard and business-like way, and you don't want this to happen for him and his mate in this case, so you'll organise it and ask the mate to treat it as any other job.
