would this look really shit?

We are tiling two areas in our bathroom - a recessed shelf above the bath, and the shower enclosure. We have chosen two lots of tiles from the same range - in brown for the shelf to make it a "feature" and cream for the shower. The tiles have a lined pattern on them.

The tiler has recommended placing them horizontally for the shelf, as it is a horizontal shape. And he would do this in "brick" style - i.e. staggered.

For the shower he wants to put them vertically, all alligned (i.e. not brick style).

In my mind this will look a bit shit, and I think that they should be laid out the same in both areas. But maybe I am just stuck on how I imagined it when I bought them.

What do you think?

Give me a visual idea of what it would look like- I can envisionage it

jeminthepantry · 11/08/2009 16:45

I meant I CAN'T envisionage it, sorry

randomtask · 11/08/2009 16:46

TBH, I'd think it'd look a bit of a mix but then I'm the sort of person who likes her features to be neat and matching.

Would probably be fine as they're in the same range, but I'd have reservations too.

randomtask · 11/08/2009 16:48

Thinking about it, as they're all horizontal still, it'd probably look like a 'nice difference'.

If I was you, I'd draw a picture of it so you can 'see it' better.

FritesMenthe · 11/08/2009 16:49

Your tiles, your decision.
I think your idea is better btw.

Bogwarts · 11/08/2009 16:55

Random - they won't all be horizontal, the ones in the shower he wants to do them vertically.

Will try to find some pictures of similar tile layouts to illustrate better.

Having just spent seven months arguing with builders/carpenters/plumbers/electricians and painters about what does and does not look shit, I say go with what you think. I have not regretted one of my decisions.

mankymummymoo · 11/08/2009 17:01

lay them out on the shelf and the floor of the shower to see what they look like... or use some blue tack to stick a few on the wall.

Bogwarts · 11/08/2009 17:05

That's good advice Guadalupe! Just need to persuade DP that my taste is better than the tradesmen!

Right, for more of a visual:

  • tiler wants to do tiles in the shower in the sort of pattern shown on bottom left of page 8 here
  • and to lay tiles in recessed shelf in the staggered way that the red tiles are in the bottom right pic on page 35 viewer.zmags.com/publication/d86db2fc#/d86db2fc/35 here]]

I think it would look better to lay the tiles the same way (don't actually mind which) in both areas

Manky - good tip. Will ask for him to drop the tiles off and refuse to make a decision before seeing the options laid out.

For some reason my computer is having a hissy fit so I can't see that but I wouldn't like them in different directions.

Go with your gut instinct as it's usually right!

Bogwarts · 11/08/2009 21:41

thanks for trying to look random.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 11/08/2009 21:46

I think it'll look shit with them in different directions. As if the tiler made a mistake.

Hormonesnomore · 11/08/2009 21:50

Usually tilers have the experience to just know what will look right - but I think this time he's wrong & you're right - I'd have them going in the same direction.

Definitely your way will look best - stand your ground!

Bogwarts · 11/08/2009 22:22

Yay - you all agree with me.

And so you should! Cos I have mocked it up (coloured in bits of A4 paper to look like the tiles ) and his suggested way does indeed look shit.

Will def be standing my ground.

navyeyelasH · 12/08/2009 07:48

I would have them the same way if it were me and all aligned as brick style might be harder to clean?

HouseHunting · 12/08/2009 13:59

Your idea is defo the best IMHO - the staggered tiles look aful
