HELP! Cooker extractor hood for v low kitchen ceiling - emergency!

Well, as much as an emergency as you can have with a cooker hood, really. Things are going somewhat wrong with our new kitchen and I need to try to sort things out first thing tomorrow morning.

Can anyone suggest a cooker extractor hood that they've used in a kitchen with a very low ceiling?

Please help

We've got quite a low ceiling and we've got a sort-of integrated cooker hood from here We've actually got the downward bit inside a cabinet - so all you can see is the square bit underneath that runs flush with the underside of the cabinet. We just pull it out and set the strength - it's V good.

Miele do a lot of integrated cooker hoods which I had in last (low ceiling flat!) and was good too.

hello. we had the same problem.

we used a cooker hood that could be used on recirculation mode (eg does not have to be ducted outside) and one where the chiminey didnt have any "workings" and comes seperate from the actual hood. most of the kitchen ones actually dont - then we basically installed it without the chimney bit and it was fine...

hope this makes sense!

How low is low?

Well, allowing for 65cm clearance above the hob rings, it looks like we have 42cm to play with.

Any inspiration?

My do says it depends on whether it extracts outside or if you use filters - as this effects how much of the hood you need or something

This is so kind of you all - I'm really touched! The blooming kitchen design woman is claiming that throughout the land there is only one cooker hood that will possibly fit. Aha, wait for the power of MN, I said to my husband.

The hood has now been semi-installed and it is dreadful - basically, they have had the bright idea of lowering the already low ceiling further in order to box in a vast cooker hood. Dreadful as in, I would rather continue eating meals made on my dad's camping stove for the next month in order to have something better installed later than have this cooker hood installed tomorrow.

The hood needs to extract outside - and really it needs to extract steam as well as odours as we've had problems with condensation and mildew in the past.

Can you chop bits off the chimneys of those metal ones? Could we go for something like that Screwfix one and shorten the chimney? Someone on another forum said they'd phoned the manufacturers and that they said you could, but they didn't say which manufacturer.

We used that screwfix one thar's why I asked hoe small is small. We hacked off our chimney too! My dp just did it though and didn't check with anyone.

Shall I see if we still have the packaging for the manufacturers info? DP has just nipped out but I will ask him about the fact yours extracts outside; ours uses filters, so might not be as simple.

you can either hack of the chimney or not use it, most of them come in two parts.

Ah - I've just looked at that screwfix hood and what you've really got there seems to be a design problem.

I reckon you can probably cut it down but it may end up looking really odd - I mean sort of stumpy. Is that the only type of cooker hood you like? Just that I think whatever you do with that shape it'll just emphasise the low ceiling.

I think the most stylish way to sort it out is to go for a pull out - sliding hood - that you slide back again. Ours only has the motor above it and it connects to the duct that goes straight out of the wall to the outside. You can then box the motor section inside an existing cabinet front (which we've done) or pop that into the ceiling. We've only got a section that is 33cm to hide!

Sorry if what I've said makes no sense! I'm looking at what I mean and trying to describe it. It is at least an option.

Thank you all so much - the kitchen lady is coming round shortly and I shall present this range of solutions to her. She says she has an alternative and it may be she's thikin about the sliding hood and cabinet.

I don't particularly care about the design of hood, now, I think it's going to be a case of making the best of a bad job.

We have now worked out an alternative and will have a cabinet above the hob (which we weren't going to have on that wall) and a sliding hood, and I shall install a glass shelf either side of the cabinet to display some of my ceramics collection on.
