Where can we find a lively and picturesque country town/large village with good primary and secondary schools, good rail links, characterful homes, beautiful countryside and a strong community spirit?

I'm sure that that Kirstie and Phil programme found that Winchester was the best place for families to live in the UK.

Alnwick in Northumberland came top in a survey a couple of years ago.
