Flooring, am I mental to paint a floor? Budget option may be my only hope...

Looking at the thread titles here I feel very poor But then I am poor so that's OK

So, I have a 2 up 2 down HA house. I'm tarting it up on a strict budget as I want to exchange as soon as I'm allowed. In my area, I will need all the help I can get.

HA don't provide floors so I've put down laminate throughout, cheapy Homebase stuff. The stairs and tiny landing are covered in vinyl tiles, dark marble effect in shades of brown and grey. Like smeared poo really. They cover the landing, 2-3 sqm and up the middle of the stairs, the outers are painted.

I cannot afford to recarpet (£250 quote) as I only plan to be here for another 6 months to a year and I hate carpet anyway. Remnant not an option as they are curved, fiddly stairs.

So my question is, has anyone ever tried painting these tiles? Would a really hard wearing paint (hammerite perhaps?!) work? I have a very beach housy decor going through the house so white woodwork and a dark blue painted tile would work.I've seen painted floors that look great but they've been wood or concrete.

That's all I can think of to do really and the tiles are too fugly to ignore. Any other ideas very gratefully received but my budget is tiny, think ones and tens of pounds, not hundereds! Thanks all.

Thank you ellie. I wonder how long it would last though? Will investigate...
