Has anyone successfully removed one without having to replaster the ceiling, and how easy was it to do! - TIA

If it's polystyrene, it should come off pretty easily with a wallpaper scraper. The problem is the glue that was holding it in place - you could try hacking it off with same but risk damaging ceiling or you could get a heat gun and try softening it and scraping (and feeling faint from fumes). Depends how much glue was used - hopefully if they were stingy enough to go for polystyrene rather than plaster rose they were pretty tight with glue as well. A steady hand and some filler and you should be alright, especially if there is a ceiling light going there.

thanks lalalonglegs - my DH has had a closer look and it is actually plaster - so you think this will make it harder to remove?

If it is original it will make a big mess. If it is one that has been put on recently, you should be able to chip it off. It was probably stuck on with plaster bonding which can be chipped off.
