How do you store a washing machine?

We won't be needing our machine for at least 6 months. It will be stored in the garage of the house. What do we need to do with it to ensure it doesn't rust/ gunge up in that time? How do you drain it entirely of water?

Put it on a spin cycle without putting it on wash first would get rid of any residual water in the system. Take off the flexi-hose thing at the back or flap it around a lot to make sure there's none in there. Open the door so it doesn't get all mouldy inside then place on a tarpaulin and wrap tarp loosely around the sides. I think that would be fine.
