We want to have our back kitchen window knocked out and put in patio doors to the garden.

Am a bit confused on whether I need a builder or a specialist fitter as its considered a small job?
any advice ?

Get builders in, they are all so desperate for work the rates have dropped around here so I'd get the job done properly.

A builder will be able to knock out the hole to required size, fit windows and make good around the edges so I would echo Sorrento and take the builder route (window fitters, ime, think their job finishes once window is in and they have squirted a bit of foam filler round the sides).

You could do either - but there are new standards (FENSA?) that they have to comply with. If you get window fitters make sure the contract specifies they will make good - to a standard you regard as acceptable. That is often the difference between cheap and more expensive windows/ doors.

ok so general concensus is a decent builder.
would builders do the FENSA as well?

Now, any recommendations for builders -am in Twickenham?

I believe the company that provides the window certifies whether they comply to FENSA or not. They may have to check that you have had them installed so they are not certifying windows on a property that do not come up to spec.
