Exterior Appearance Of Property?

How important is the exterior appearance of your house? I think it is very important but am struggling to find an attractive looking house in my area within budget. I know you can tarten the place up so it looks more appealing to the eye but there is only so much you can do cosmetically. What do you think? Thanks

Actually I think the exterior appearance of surrounding houses is more important since that's what you have to look at!

I think redoing the exterior of a house has been a really neglected area - as I said on another recent thread, you can work miracles on the drabbest houses: new (often larger), good quality windows; render or wooden cladding to cover up cheap brickwork; making new openings for windows; a new front door rather than some 1980s monstrosity on a period house; planting etc. Agree with LilianGish that if your house is one of many drab ones that make up the local housing stock then there has to be a tipping point locally where enough people want to change them.

Yeah I think that too - dreary dreary dreary
Thanks
