Patio floor - what are my options?!

I don't think decking is practical for us (have a child who constantly pokes things through little holes so can imagine years of dropped keys through the slats!) I saw some lovely outdoor glazed tiles but would these be really slippery? I find stone a bit dull to look at - can you get anything other than grey?! I really want it to look nice - I love terracotta Mediterranean sort of floors, rather than boring old concrete slabs, but they must be slippery even if it's not raining eg. just with dew in the morning?

Any thoughts?

Don't rule out something like block-paving. I don't mean the horrible, harsh types that spring up on driveways everywhere but the more "cobbled" looking one.

We did a courtyard area of our garden outside our back door using it -its been in place about 18m/2yrs and it has aged beautifully.

Admitedly when you lay it it does look a bit stark but this one has, like I said, aged nicely and looks in keeping with the age of the house. You can get slight colour variations too so its not a solid block of the same shade of grey

I'll try and find out from DP which one it was and come back and post a link later

Have a look at Bradstone -they have various natural and reconstructed paving materials.

I've got a feeling thats where ours was from

Thanks, Norbert - I looked at Bradstone and may have found the answer! They have a terracotta-coloured stone - perfect! Thanks ever so much.
