HYDE, MANCHESTER: Come on, who has the love?

We currently live abroad, but DH may have got a job in Hyde, Manchester and so we're wondering what it's really like.
Anyone live here? Schools? Shopping? Social life? Housing? Best area to live in? Not live in Hyde but eg. Stalybridge instead?
Any tips of hints you have would be greatly appreciated.

Hyde. Hmm, Harold Shipman. Unfair but, well, Hyde itself isn't that nice really. Don't know enough about other areas to make any useful contribution

Hyde itself is fairly humdrum - not exactly salubrious, but not as grim as some of its near neighbours.

Most people up here (not necessarily correctly IMVHO) think that Stockport borough is preferable to Tameside, where Hyde is, and I'm sure oyu could commute very easily from Stockport, esp. Bredbury or the Heatons.
