Moving to Herts/Cambs borders

We're currently in North Herts (near Hitchin) but are looking to move further north but don't really know the area well. We'd want to live in a village, or even outside a village (as rural as possible).

Aside from finding the right house for us, the key things we need are:

  1. cycling distance of a station with fast trains into LOndon (can compromise on this but would prefer not to)
  2. good primary school
  3. somewhere where there is next to no chance of houses, roads, airports etc being built on green belt land (insofar as that is possible in this part of the world).

Ideally we'd like to be near good secondary schools (state or private) too, although we can always move again several years down the line.

Can anyone who knows the area suggest places to consider and avoid?

Oh, thank you. I'll have a look on rightmove etc.

Do you (or anyone else) know anything about Ashwell - that's somewhere dh keeps mentioning.
