Is there anything I need to know or do before considering this?

Are you in a smokeless zone? Have you had the chimney capped? Will it need lined? Are you prepared for the constant draught that a chimney causes at ground level?

I've had open fires in every house I've lived in since 1987 and wouldn't be without one, but they're a lot more work than a gas fire. Gas fire, you switch it on, you have heat. Open fire, you have to clean out yesterdays ashes, dust the ashes off every flat surface in the room, set fire with paper/kindling or firelighter, wonder why it is that an unattended cigarette can set the whole house up in flames but combustible material in a grate goes out as soon as you stop looking at it... Oh, and there will be sparks causing burn marks on your carpet/rug, no matter how big your fireplace is!
