Do you need any kind of permission to move a staircase?

We viewed a house today that needs a lot of work & probably a double storey extension on the back. In order to access the extension part of the house (rather than walking through a room to it) we are wondering if moving the staircase may make the new layout work better - would we need to obtain any kind of permissio beforehand? Also, is it a costly exercise? Thanks!

No you don't, we've moved ours twice! Not sure if building regs might need to check it afterwards though...I think it cost a couple of grand to move it, but that was a while ago.

If you move you need to comply with building regs, but if you replace whats there then they don't apply retrospetively. Just had our staircase / landing all replaced in oak - was a tad pricey but very pleased how its changed the whole look of the entrance plus some dodgy beams had to be replaced at the same time.

Thanks both of you. Apparently the house we viewed has 3 offers on the table, of which one is a cash offer. We still need to sell our house. Oh well!!
