My parents' house has a ghost. I spent my childhood being scared witless by this thing. It was in my old bedroom (they have a big old farm house, a couple of hundred years old) and it used to get up to strange things... I'd wake up and find things in a different place to where I'd left them. Once I woke and found a bottle fitted into a small plate thing I had. Another time I couldn't sleep and I felt a finger draw a line down my back. I had a rash there the next day. I refused to sleep in that room after that.

There's something odd about that room. I will never look up at the windows in case I see someone/something looking out at me. The door closes with no reason. Even now, when it is beautifully decorated, nice en-suite added, etc., I refuse to go in there. Ugh. Gives me the creeps just thinking about it.

Ohhhh spooky. Have you tried to look up the history of the house?

Mammina · 26/02/2009 14:33

I'm paranoid when I hear things like this that we'll end up buying somewhere that's haunted - I mean you just wouldn't know would you, the estate agent is hardly going to mention anything weird like that!

If you are sensitive to such things you'll know when you visit the house. You can always google the address to make sure it hand't been on CrimeWatch!

maybe I'll take my sister in law along for a second viewing, she's VERY sensitive to stuff like that

We lived in a very old Elizabethan house that used to be a sort of guest house for Cistercian monks travelling to Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire.

We found a small dead 'body' in the wall (possibly a miscarried baby) but the ghost we had 'lived' in the orchard where there were traces of old buildings.

The monk would walk across the orchard in much the same way as any normal living person would. He wore a cloak like a monk with a hood on his head and sort of walked through a hedge and disappeared. The dogs always knew he was there and my mother saw him quite often. Never bothered us.

That said, the OP may well be hearing floorboards moving which is very common when houses are heating and cooling. The old house we lived in positively shook with constant movement and was extremely noisey especially at night.

Very interesting to read other people's ghost stories - which I enjoyed.
