Hi everyone,

I need abit of advice about painting kitchen cabinets.

I currently have orangey pine kitchen cabinets and although I would love a new kitchen we really can't afford it so I want to update it a little.

I want to paint them but need to find out abit more about it...

Has anybody else done this and how have they come out?

Do I need to sand them and undercoat them?

What sort of paint should I use?

Thanks

G x

It depends if you want a really polished look or a rustic one. If it's rustic you are after, you will need to sand, paint on a primer/undercoat and then paint with the topcoat of your choice. You can use any paint suitable for wood finish (gloss/satin/eggshell for wood). The most important stage is getting good undercoat coverage because if you skimp on this the topcoat will just flake off.

For more polished look, find a car body shop and get them to spray paint. We did this a few years ago and it looked great.

buy midget rollers rather than a paint brush as it goes on more smoothly.

o take the time to prep - sand it down if you can and make sure no grease.

ask in store for the est type of paint for your venture.

lalalonglegs, did it cost alot to have them sprayed? I like this idea....

My mum has just painted her dark MFI bedroom units and they look lovely. she got ordinary cupboard paint.

WE painted out brown units 3 years ago.

WE used Crown Kitchen Door Paint. Like Custy said, use mini roller.
And sand before.

WE did 2 coats and was fine. WE took the doors off to do it.

WE just re did them at Christmas, so lasted well.

And we used the same paint ot do an old chest of drawers and ottoman.

No, it didn't but I think the guy who did it was just really surprised by the request and didn't know what to charge. He only wanted £100.

Bigchops, we had the orangey pine cupboards when we moved in here too! The doors were solid wood so I lightly sanded them (and I mean lightly!) and gave them a couple of coats of F&B oil eggshell paint. The end panels were wood-effect melamine and I bought some melamine primer (from Wickes I think) and put a coat of that on first - though as I got impatient I did them without the primer and they came out fine.

It was around 8 years before we got around to replacing the kitchen and we had very little chipping (and no peeling). My main advice would be to use a good quality non-eco oil based paint.

I've got orangey cupboards but they're not pine, God knows what they are, just er...flat wood. Would love to get them painted as I hate the colour so will be watching with interest

we did the same as lalalonglegs and had the cabinets sprayed and they did look really good. Although we did pay a lot more that 100 quid!

my sister painted hers and had a much more rustic look but still nice.

Did he do it in situ and how long did it take?

MrsSeanBean · 16/06/2010 09:59

Use Farrow and Ball interior eggshell. DH did this for me a couple of years ago. We didn't bother to sand and it still turned out fine. Was oak before. Needed two coats of paint though.
